Pet food contamination has unfortunately been at a high this month, with the Food and Drug Administration recalling a wide range of different products containing potentially harmful toxins or chemicals at an alarmingly regular rate.
As these incidents unfold, two more products were recalled, announced as voluntary rescinded by their respective companies, by the FDA on Friday.
The first of these foods is the Chicken and Salmon Recipe by Northwest Naturals, a company from Portland, Oregon. This recall referred to their five pound frozen food chubs, which are dog foods. It was issued due to a suspected listeria monocytogenes contamination. All products involved have a UPC code of 087316384406 and the best before code 15082218.
Listeria monocytogenes is a variety of pathogenic bacteria that can have negative effects on both dogs and humans when ingested. Pup parents whose hands were not thoroughly rinsed after handling the food may also be susceptible. It can result in diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fevers.
The second product is the Treat Me Crunchy Beef Delight by Trupet LLC, a company from Milford, Ohio. This recall referred to their 2.5 ounce dog treats and was issued due to suspected salmonella contamination. All products involved are a part of the lot number 2019051413753 and were sold via Chewy.com and TruDog.com.
Salmonella is a relatively well-known bacteria, and its resulting symptoms vary. Some pups may face mild fevers, lessened appetite, and abdominal cramps, while others may have more serious symptoms like diarrhea that may contain blood, vomiting, or higher fevers. Again, pup parents may feel negative effects if they neglected to wash their hands after handling the treats.
Pup parents who have purchased this food may contact the respective companies for refund and exchange instructions. Make sure to monitor your pups for symptoms and be sure to bring them to a vet if they show signs of illness.
