Everyone meet Stone, an adorable and talented Labrador pup who helps detect his 9 year old sibling’s blood sugar levels, whether high or low. This fur ball is specially trained to detect blood glucose and that makes him a hero!
When 9 year old Nathan Zabilansky as diagnosed with Type I diabetes three years ago, it wasn’t only his health that was at stake, his emotions were hurt too. Nathan said that people made fun of him. For Nathan, there is no cure so he must always make sure that his blood sugar levels are normal because anything low or high could hurt him.
This is where Stone comes into picture as he is specially trained to detect a rise or fall of blood glucose thereby alerting Nathan and his parents to take action. Nathan said, “He did his paw and then he lifted it up, and then he nudges you…”
According Training Director Cheri Campbell of Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers, “He will actually alert before he’s low or before he’s high.” Gina Zabilansky said, “He will have the biggest support system there beside him all the time. Stone will be there to save the day.” Yep he sure will! Take a look at their story on page 2 below!
