While most dog parents don’t think twice about sneaking their dog a bite of their meals, not all human foods are safe for dogs to eat. Mustard is one such human food that should be nowhere near your dog!
Why You Should Keep Mustard Away From Your Dog
Mustard seeds, from which mustard is made, are toxic for dogs and they have a lot of difficulties digesting them.
Your dog will most likely be fine if he/she licks a little bit of mustard from your plate or a wrapper. However, if he/she gets paws on the entire bottle, several health problems may arise. Note that store-bought mustard might also have other toxic ingredients for dogs and this can worsen the problem.
Some of these health problems include an inflammation of the stomach and intestinal lining called gastroenteritis. This can be a very uncomfortable time for your dog, and he/she will likely experience excruciating abdominal pain, painful diarrhea, and uncontrollable vomiting.
Help! My Dog Has Already Eaten Mustard
If your dog somehow manages to eat a ton of mustard while you weren’t watching, give him/her some water to help flush it out of the digestive system. Pay close attention to how your dog reacts and see if there are any adverse symptoms. If your dog starts showing symptoms, get in contact with your regular vet immediately to find out what you can do, and if your dog needs to go in for treatment.
While large dogs may be able to manage a couple of licks of mustards, smaller dogs may not fare as well.
