Can I Catch COVID-19 From My Dog?

Everyone is being told to wear masks and to social distance from friends and family members, but does this apply to your dog?

Your dog is as much a part of your family as everyone else and it would suck to have to stay away. Luckily, there’s no scientific data to suggest that dogs can transmit the virus!

It’s a question that has been on the mind of many. The CDC has advised that pet parents do not need to worry about getting COVID-19 from their dogs. This is so rare that the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has only been able to identify less than 25 cases worldwide! (June 2020)

Maintaining Proper Hygiene

While the risk is low and it is not clear how covid affects dogs, maintaining proper hygiene is important in preventing other diseases.

Ensure you wash your hands after interacting with your dog, touching his/her toys, or coming in contact with waste. Keep your dog’s toys and supplies away from your kitchen and eating areas to prevent cross-contamination.

If you get bitten or scratched, wash the area immediately with soap and warm water. If you or your dog appears sick, seek medical attention.

Can I Give My Dog COVID-19?

Yes, you can give your dog COVID-19. One study showed that 2 of 15 dogs with confirmed COVID-19 cases ended up contracting the virus.

Can My Dog Die From COVID-19?

The answer to this question is unclear as no dogs have died from contracting COVID-19. The case numbers are very low and the symptoms are mild or nonexistent. They generally include fever, shortness of breath, coughing or sneezing, tiredness, runny nose, vomiting, and diarrhea.

What To Do If I Think My Dog Has COVID-19

The first thing you should do is call your veterinarian. He/she will administer a test if necessary. If positive, isolate your dog from other pets and people. Do not bring him/her to public places unless necessary without a mask.

Be sure to clean and disinfect all surfaces your dog comes in contact with. Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap every time you come in contact with him/her. If your dog’s symptoms worsen, contact the veterinarian immediately.

Keeping Your Family Safe

The best way to prevent COVID-19 is to social distance and isolate yourself and your dog from others. Once this thing is over, we can go back to normal life!
