Have you ever realized that your dog licks you more when you apply creams and lotions? That’s because most dogs, apparently, love the taste of lotions and other topical products. But can these lotions and creams make our dogs sick?
- Steroid based creams can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, increased thirst and urination
- Antifungal creams can cause vomiting and diarrhea
- Calamine lotion can cause vomiting and diarrhea
- Antibiotic ointments can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach upset
- Muscle rub ointments can cause bloody vomiting and stomach ulcers
- Sunscreens and antihistamine creams can cause stomach upset
- Moisturizing creams can cause drooling, vomiting and diarrhea
- Hormone creams can cause mammary gland enlargement and false pregnancy in dogs
- Diaper rash creams with zinc oxide can cause severe vomiting. Please consult your vet immediately if there’s blood in the vomit
- Rogaine can cause fluid buildup in the lungs and heart failure after signs of vomiting and lethargy
- Flurbiprofen can cause kidney failure
- Retinoids can cause stomach upsets, but if a pregnant dog gets exposed to it, it can cause birth defects
- Dovonex can cause vomiting and kidney failure. A small amount can kill dogs
- 5-FU, Efudex can cause seizures, bloody vomiting, diarrhea, and bone marrow suppression. It can cause death.
If you suspect your dogs may have licked a cream or lotion that can be deadly please visit the vet immediately.
