Summer is often difficult for many animal shelters due to overcrowding problems. Thankfully, some shelters in the South are getting the help needed to address the problem and find forever homes for different pets.
About 139 dogs and cats were transferred from over a dozen overcrowded shelters in Louisiana and Alabama on August 30 as part of the Greater Good Charities' Good Flights program.
The program was created by a partnership between Animal Rescue Site, Hill's Pet Nutrition, and NBC Universal Local as part of the NBC and Telemundo stations' 2022 Clear The Shelters pet adoption and donation campaign.
"In Louisiana, we're at critical capacity in the animal shelters, and these Good Flight programs truly save lives," Rebecca Lirette, Assistant to the Director of the Iberville Parish Animal Shelter, explains. Many Louisiana pets would be rehomed in different shelters across New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, and New Jersey.
A sweet pup named Dobby is one of the dogs headed to better opportunities. She was found in the middle of a busy road during rush hour, hairless, covered in scabs, and emaciated. Her foster, Megan Zigler, expressed joy that the Greater Good program would see Dobby getting all the help she needs to live a more comfortable life.
