Dachshunds And Kids: Does It Work?

Dachshunds and Children

Children and dogs should never be left alone and unattended even for a moment. Young children do not have proper dog etiquette and dogs do not understand a child’s behavior. This can result in tragedy with any breed of dog. This breed tends to not be recommended for young children.

Conflicts

The breed’s stubborn, nonsense nature can result in conflicts with small children. They are also vulnerable to back injuries if mishandled. Generally responsible, gentle, older children that have reached an age that is able to understand the needs and responsibility of caring for this breed will prove compatible.

Personality

Like children, each dog is also different in personality, energy and patience levels. So, each dog and child relationship should be considered as individual. If you have young children, you’re probably better off with a Standard. Because of their size, minis can be easily hurt; unfortunately, children have a hard time understanding just how delicate they are.

Likewise, Minis have little patience for the kind of poking, prodding, and pulling; they have been known to injure a small child if they lose patience. Parents should never leave dogs and small children together unsupervised. They like older, considerate children who respect their dog’s space and privacy. A Dachshund can make a good best friend.

Well it all depends on a variety of factors. Usually some appear to be a bit temperamental around very small children, like toddlers. But this may be due to they way they are treated. Most small children do not know the difference between a pet and a stuffed animal, so accidents may tend to happen.

On the other hand, some Dachshunds are great with children and make great pets if trained properly. As other small dog breeds they need discipline and leadership. A lack of discipline may cause behavior problems in this strong willed and often stubborn breed.

Some Dashounds accept children in the household very well, but may be stand-offish and temperamental with unfamiliar children. Always keep this in mind, a Dachshund that loves your kids not necessarily loves ALL kids.

In the end

As a general rule of thumb, I would be cautious of combining toddlers with Dachshunds. The combination of a noisy child screaming or mishandling a dog and a dog breed not very tolerant may likely result in a snapping dog and a crying child. They child could also accidentally fall on the dachshund, injuring their back (which can lead to major health issues if not death).

Ideally, good research is the key to having a stable minded Dachshund. Look for breeders that raise them in a loving home around children. It may take a good dose of luck along with a good amount of discipline to make children and Dachshund live happily together.

Sometimes the best solution seems to be adopting adult Dachshunds that have already proven their temperament around kids versus a Dachshund puppy whose temperament may remain a doubtful and uncertain question mark and whichever dog you bring into your home, it’s always best to supervise kids and dogs for both their safety.
