Darwin’s Natural Pet Products of Tukwila, Washington has issued a recall on their food due to contamination with salmonella bacteria.
The products being pulled from the shelves are:
- Natural Selections Duck Meals for Dogs (two-pound bags, Lot number 40807, manufacture on 09/29/17).
- Natural Selections Turkey Meals for Dogs (two-pound bags, Lot number #39937, manufactured on 08/24/17)
According to the company, the products affected were sold during September and October this year. Salmonella can cause serious and often life-threatening infections in humans, especially the elderly and the very young. If you purchased either product, you could be at risk just from handling it.The FDA stated that animals, like dogs, rarely get sick from the bacteria.
But if you have an older dog, a puppy, or a dog with a weak immune system, they could become sick. Some of the symptoms to look out for include diarrhea (sometimes bloody diarrhea), lethargy, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever. Some pets may only have abdominal pain, fever, and loss of appetite. The President of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, Gary Tashjian has said anyone that experiences symptoms after handling the dog food, or has a dog with any signs, should get medical help.
According to Tashijan, no reports of illness from the bacteria have been reported to the company. If you have any of the product, put the remaining food in a plastic bag and put in the trash. Contact productsafety@darwinspet.com to get a replacement. You will need to include your name, address, date and time the food was manufactured and indicate how much food you had left.
