Pup parents might feel like half of their reprimands towards their pups have to do with them eating something they’re not supposed to or having a suspicious item in their mouths.
Sometimes, it isn’t even food that they’re after – it could be garbage, dirt, or even poop. Yikes!
Many pups can get away with eating bad things every once in a while, but it can also make them very sick. So why do they do it? Well, many pups like the process of chewing, which in turn leads to them swallowing, so they compulsively chew on and therefore ingest things that they see.
On top of that, pups have learned never to waste, so what you consider garbage is considered by your pup to be a treasure trove of resources that should not simply be thrown out. If there is a chance that something is edible, a pup believes it should be eaten, simple as that.
But this is a serious problem, and in some pups, this is characterized as a disorder known as pica, which some believe is a way that canine compulsive disorder – the doggy version of OCD – manifests. Pics a condition where pups repeatedly consume items that are non-digestible.
If your pup does eat something that cannot be digested and therefore cannot naturally pass through his gastrointestinal tract, then you must talk to a vet immediately. And if he consumes non-edible items regularly and seems to have pica, then he also needs assistance from a vet and medication. Like and share this information!
