What started as a fun day for one dog in Michigan, quickly turned into a day she will want to forget. This is after she fell off a sailboat that she had been sailing in with her parents.
Lucky for her, the Wilcox family who were on a boat trip found her before anything tragic could happen. Jeannie Wilcox, her rescuer, says she spotted a red animal in the water and began shouting frantically after realizing that it was a dog. “I see this red animal in the lake, and I started screaming, ‘Dog in the water!'” Jeannie recalls in her interview with a reporter.
Jeannie estimates that the dog had been in the water for more than an hour. The family brought the dog aboard, dried her off and in an act of pure selflessness, the family sailed four hours to Belmont where they had the dog’s microchip scanned to identify her parents. Jeannie’s only hope is that her actions can inspire more good deeds from others. “I just hope that if this was my dog, somebody would do the same for me.”
She is quoted saying. “I would just be very grateful, happy because I know how rough Lake Michigan can be.” The Wilcox family shared a video of the reunion where she goes on to jokingly refer to their boat as the ‘water dog rescue’ in her caption. “Happy Happy reunion! All dogs welcome on Off The Hook…aka water dog rescue.”
You can see the gratitude on the dog’s mom face who was probably worried sick that they had lost her. You can also hear the dad deservedly congratulate the dog in the background. She acted instinctively, and by not panicking, she was able to preserve energy and tread on the water until rescue came along.
