Dog Trainer Says Walking Your Dog Every Day May Not Be A Good Idea

Dog parents do several things to give their dogs the best life. From providing quality food to regular veterinary check-ups to daily walks.

While walking your dog every day may seem like a healthy routine, a 53-year-old dog trainer, Niki French, claims it may not be as beneficial as it sounds.

French, who has been training dogs for years, said daily walks are not essential for all dogs, and it may be better for dog parents to opt for less regular walks. “It might come as a surprise, but traditional walks are a human invention and aren’t helpful for many of our dogs,” she said in an interview.

The dog trainer suggests that dog parents replace regular walks with training sessions and games at home. She also warns that dogs with behavior struggles may be reactive or excitable when dog parents attempt to exhaust them with excessive exercise. According to French, her rescue dog is calmer when playing games compared to going on walks. However, she still takes him on walks occasionally.

Daily walks can be stressful for dogs and their parents. Thankfully, some home games can stimulate your dog’s mental and physical health while allowing you to bond with them. If you are tired of walking your dog every day and want to try something new, you may want to look into having some interactive games and training sessions at home.
