Dog Who's Not Allowed On Couch Dodges Parent With An Amusing "Loophole"

Dogs tend to get comfortable when they take a break, more so when there’s the chance to nestle up on a comfy couch; a temptation too great to resist. Lexie found an intriguing way around her parents’ rule stating that she can’t be on the couch.

In an amusing clip, Lexie pretends to be asleep whilst her parents tell her to get off the couch; making it seem as though she fell asleep accidentally.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with permitting your dog to relax with you on the couch, not all dog parents like sharing the space with their dogs, for a variety of reasons. If that is you, consider the following:

  • Start on the right paw by being consistent; ensure that all house members agree to the “no dogs allowed on the couch” rule. It’s much better to keep your dog off the couch from the very beginning, even when they’re a tiny pup because there’s more difficulty in un-training the behavior once your dog has gotten used to it.
  • If you want to keep your dog off the couch, make sure to provide them with a comfy alternative. Keep their new seating close to where you lounge and maybe consider investing in a few other resting spaces to put around the house. An added bonus could be placing something enticing in that space, to keep your dog in their seating.
  • If you’re at the phase where you’ve caught your dog on the couch so many times already, It could be time to teach them the “off” cue. A dog-friendly technique where you take a small treat and toss it on the ground a few meters away from the couch where your dog is. Say the cue “off” and direct your hand gestures to the treat as your dog moves from the couch. Most importantly; make sure you acknowledge your dog any time they choose to sleep on their own bed instead of the furniture.

It may seem like a continuous struggle to try to keep them off the couch, but with a lot of patience, your dog will eventually understand where they can relax.
