Dog With Stone-Like Skin Gets Rescued From Euthanasia List

For stray dogs, life is rough and dangerous. Most times, strays don’t receive any help, and even if they are “rescued”, they are at risk of being put on a euthanasia list. For a chihuahua named Blondie, this could have been the reality.

When she was rescued off the streets of South Phoenix, the county didn’t think anyone was going to adopt her, so she was deemed unworthy of saving.

She was suffering from a skin condition that made her skin appear “like stone”. She had no hair, and she was covered in painful scabs. Not only was she in pain, but she was afraid to be around humans. Because of how she looked and the medical attention she needed, the shelter decided it was easier to euthanize her.

Fortunately, Sky Sanctuary Rescue offered to take Blondie and help her out. One of the founders, Caitlin Bell, offered to be her foster mom until her skin healed and they could find her a home. Caitlin contacted a vet who informed her that Blondie was suffering from several skin issues, but they could be solved. Caitlin started giving Blondie medicated baths, and that did the trick. After a few weeks, her skin no longer seemed like stone, and after two months, her hair started growing back.

In that time, Blondie started becoming more confident and trusting. She started to show her personality and be happier. Caitlin had only intended to foster her, but after their time together she knew they couldn’t be apart anymore. So, she officially adopted Blondie.

Unfortunately, Blondie passed away in December 2020 because of an autoimmune condition that was discovered too late. Even still, she lived a happy and fulfilling life with Caitlin.
