When an elderly woman named Mary was hospitalized due to respiratory failure, her pup Herman had to be taken in by Leawood, Kansas’ State Line Animal Hospital.
Unfortunately, Mary did not recover. Her illness was determined to be terminal, but she had one final wish. Dr. Ryan Sears, who was Mary’s physician, agreed that this wish would be granted.
So what was this wish? All Mary wanted was to be able to clap eyes upon Herman for one final instance. So, Herman, who is 11 years old and of the Rat Terrier breed, was brought in. The moment they saw each other, they were both extremely excited. Mary just wanted to pet her little pup, and Herman had to be wrapped up in a blanket so he wouldn’t run too wild!
Mary passed away the next day, leaving Herman behind, along with a request that he would be able to find a loving forever home. Herman was successfully adopted quickly, but due to his separation anxiety, he was returned shortly after because the family could not give him the attention he required.
Herman’s story spread through social media. Finally, he was able to find a brand new home. So far, he has been happily receiving all the affection he wants. Still, the State Line Animal Hospital has a long list of adoption applicants who will be ready and waiting should he need different arrangements again.
Sadly, Herman’s case – of finding a new home so quickly – is not common among older pups left behind. This is why it’s important for your pets to factor into your own end-of-life plans!
