Having a dog is a huge responsibility and a lifelong commitment because they are living beings who depend on us to cater to their needs for as long as they live. Dogs are not items of entertainment that you dump when things are no longer convenient. When you add a dog to your family, you are making a promise to them to care for them in sickness and in health. Sadly, it's not everyone that treats dogs that way.
One family didn't think twice before dumping their dog, Zeus, after his health deteriorated. The pup had always been a good boy, yet his family dropped him off at a high-kill animal shelter in Oklahoma
According to St. Francis Care, his family said they surrendered him because they didn't want to have a "defective dog." However, Zeus wasn't defective. He was only suffering from a degenerative nerve disease that left him paralyzed.
The good people at St. Francis Care in Illinois rescued Zeus and got him into hydrotherapy. His healing journey wasn't without setbacks, but the pup never gave up. With time and love, Zeus's health improved, and they got him a doggie wheelchair.
Zeus's foster mom, Lynda Kuether, described him as "a shining example of what happens when you don’t throw something away." Lynda ended up adopting Zeus, making him a permanent member of her family.
