Find Out Why Your Dogs Stretch Too Much. The Reason May Surprise You

It can be concerning to see your dog stretching a lot more than normal. Here are some factors you need to take into account when considering dog stretching, especially in excess.

Stomach Pain

A dog who stretches very often could be experiencing some degree of stomach pain and attempting to release pressure from inside the stomach. It could also be a warning sign of bloat, which is a medical emergency – look for an overly bulging stomach, excessive drooling, a very warm tummy, or odd gurgles from inside.

Bowing

Dogs who have not been spayed or neutered may do a behavior known as a “bow” as a mating signal to potential suitors.

Dragging Legs

A dog who is scooting along on their stomach with their legs dangling behind them is likely trying to stretch parts of their back and hips that they can’t stretch otherwise. If they’re not in pain, it’s totally fine.

Splooting

This funny word means a dog is lying on their stomach flat, with their legs extended outwards. This is just a form of relaxation and is especially common in warm months.

Pancreatitis

In order to reduce stomach pressure caused by early-stage pancreatitis, a dog may stretch. Signs to look out for are weakness, feverish, hunching, and distention in stomach belly.
