A French bulldog named, Wilbur Feast, clinched the mayoralty seat in the small town of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, after earning 13,143 votes not only from its local community but from all over the world.
Though not political, Rabbit Hash has maintained this unusual fundraising tradition of electing animal candidates as their mayor. It started since the river hamlet community’s 19th century general store burned down in 2016, and afterward, rebuilt through the funds raised from donor votes for their chosen canine candidates. Each dollar is equated to one vote for each chosen candidate.
Besides Rabbit Hash, the Ohio River community of Kentucky, which is populated by over a hundred people, also conduct these mayoralty elections since the 1990s. The Rabbit Hash Historical Society, the forerunner of the said election, has told the media that they will continue to stage similar happy events for their visitors of all ages, offering them a unique experience of their town’s history.
In their official statement, the Rabbit Hash Historical Society said that over 22,000 votes were cast, considered to be their highest ever. Coming in second was the beagle, Jack Rabbit, and on third was Poppy, the golden retriever. These two other winning candidates are expected to serve the town as its ambassadors. Meantime, the Rabbit Hash Historical Society said that Mayor Wilbur will be attending public events soon and is encouraging people to communicate with the newly elected official through their social media account.
