Fromm Family Pet Food recently announced on their website that they are recalling some of their dog food products because they do not contain recommended levels of vitamins and minerals and may contain excessive amounts of vitamin D.
Since excessive amounts of vitamin D can be toxic to dogs, the pet food company’s president has announced a recall on their website. According to Justin Lee, DVM, excessive amounts of vitamin D can be toxic to pets and can easily poison them.
In her article on Pet Health Network, she stated, “When ingested in poisonous amounts, vitamin D can result in life-threatening elevations in calcium (i.e., hypercalcemia) and phosphorous (i.e., hyperphosphatemia). When this occurs, it results in soft tissue mineralization–or hardening of the tissue. This mineralization often occurs in the kidneys (renal tubules), gastrointestinal tract, aorta, and even the heart. This can result in severe acute kidney failure within just a few days.”
