Skin allergies can be incredibly annoying, uncomfortable, and painful for dogs.
Known in medical circles as canine atopic dermatitis (CAD), these allergies result in dry and itchy skin that can then cause hair loss, lesions, bacterial infections, and even death.
What are allergies? Well, they’re the response of the immune system to external allergens. These can come in many forms, with the most common ones being food, the environment, or contact. In order to treat an allergy, you have to be aware of what to look out for, like:
- Excessive licking
- Scratching or biting the skin
- Chewing paws
- Nasal discharge
- Watery eyes
- Breathing issues (take your pup to the vet immediately for this one!)
There are, of course, medical preventative methods to avoid allergies. However, there may also be a simple supplement-based way to boost a pup’s immune system and decrease allergic symptoms. This supplement can also help reduce inflammation of joints and the symptoms of arthritis, and research has been pretty optimistic about it!
What am I on about? Omega fatty acid supplements! Dogs are unable to produce any omega acids on their own, so the only way they can get them is through external means. Omega-3 fish oil supplements can do wonders for fighting allergies in pups. Read more about them here!
Remember, before putting your pup on any kind of medicine, it’s a good idea to have them checked out by a veterinarian and to follow the instructions given by the medical professionals. Like and share this if you found it helpful!
