Nearly 70% of families in the United States have pets. Have you ever thought about what would happen to your pet during a natural disaster – like floods, tornados, extended power outages, wildfires, or a major snowstorm?
Hurricane Harvey devastated parts of Texas and left tens of thousands of homes destroyed. How many pets live in those home – and where are those animals now? If you have pets, you should seriously consider having a plan, an escape route or something set up for not only your pets but for you as well. After you have a plan, you should always be sure to leave early!
Don’t wait until the last minute, if you know trouble is on the way – get out! You should decide before the disaster how your pets will be evacuated – most of the time emergency services can’t help you evacuate your pets. So, that means you will have to arrange for them to be transported or transport them yourself.

Don’t rely on just one plan – have an alternate! What if you aren’t home when disaster strikes? You should line up family or friends to help in that case. If you own livestock or other large animals, you will face extra challenges in handling, transporting, and relocating them. Find a buddy in the area who can help.
Remember practicing fire drills in school? Why did we do that? So when the time came, we knew what to do! Practicing your escape plan will ensure you have ironed out all the details and fixed any issues before you are faced with an emergency. Stay safe out there!
