This dog ate what might be growing in your backyard too. If you recognize it, keep your dogs AWAY.
Not one of my usual articles, I know. I’m constantly looking for ways to make your visit worthwhile by posting happy articles and stuff, but I just couldn’t resist posting this one. Do you recognize this plant?
This Is Called A Water Hemlock. See What It Can Do To Your Pets And See How This Poor Dog Died.
The water hemlock, according to Wikipedia, “is a small genus of four species of highly poisonous plants in the family Apiaceae.” Unfortunately the 3-year-old border collie mix didn’t know that when she ate the plant on a Sunday afternoon and within an hour, she passed away.
Ludi Fischer, a friend of the dog’s owner was quoted saying that, “It started to go down rapidly with losing all the functions and she passed out. She couldn’t stand up anymore. She was panting very heavily. Her eyes were out. I mean you couldn’t tell she wasn’t there.” The poor dog died on the way to the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. To everyone’s horror, a necropsy revealed that she died from consuming a water hemlock plant.
Dr. Dawn Duval, Department of Clinical Sciences associate professor at Colorado State University stated, “Water hemlock is one of the most lethal plants in North America. It’s a plant that grows in very moist areas, around ditches and lakes. This dog just got unlucky and kind of started playfully chewing on a plant that it shouldn’t be chewing. Water hemlock is not a plant that would be particularly appealing to dogs.“
If a dog consumes the water hemlock, apart from confirmed death, the symptoms include drooling, muscle twitching and seizures. Please SHARE this post with your friends and let’s save our furry friends.
