We’re always learning new things about the world, and in 2019, we learned a fair share about dogs. Here are 12 things science uncovered about dogs last year!
- Puppy Dog Eyes. This expression and maintained eye contact with you causes both you and your dog to produce more oxytocin, the love hormone, so you’re bonding!
- Pepper and Scents. Unlike the popular myths, dogs are only a little confused by pepper when trailing a scent; they’ll get back on track quickly!
- Growls and Sizes. Both humans and dogs are able to accurately predict the size of another dog based on its growl.
- Classical Music. Dogs can be calmed down through classical music!
- Tail Wag Directions. Dogs wag their tails left when happy and right when stressed out – a mark of their left versus right brain in action!
- Lying. Dogs can pick up on cues that tell them when their owners are lying to them!
- Shelter Dogs. These rescued dogs are no more likely to have behavioral issues than other dogs – and may be even less likely to do so!
- Diabetes. Children who have dogs have a much lower risk of type 1 diabetes development.
- Anxiety. Dogs can successfully aid children with anxiety.
- Avoidance. A dog will avoid people who have reacted negatively around their loved ones, indicating higher social intelligence than once believed.
- Tone. Dogs pick up on human tones and respond to them differently; pets do well with calm tones and service dogs do well with excited tones!
- Gazes. Untrained dogs tend to follow the gaze of the human in front of them, opening up new possibilities for training methods.
