Many foods that are harmless to humans are toxic to dogs. Here are 21 of them.

  1. Caffeine. Even tiny amounts can cause severe toxicity.
  2. Grapes. It’s unclear what is in grapes that is so harmful, but whatever it is, it can be deadly to dogs.
  3. Mushrooms. Many common kinds of this fungus are toxic to dogs.
  4. Chocolate. The theobromine and caffeine in chocolate make it doubly toxic to dogs.
  5. Rhubarb. The calcium oxalate crystals in this lead to severe drops in calcium levels in dogs.
  6. Apricot. These contain small amounts of cyanide deadly to dogs.
  7. Xylitol. This artificial sweetener can cause very severe medical problems.
  8. Garlic. This veggie contains n-propyldisulfide and thiosulphate, which can both damage canine cells.
