Many foods that are harmless to humans are toxic to dogs. Here are 21 of them.
- Caffeine. Even tiny amounts can cause severe toxicity.
- Grapes. It’s unclear what is in grapes that is so harmful, but whatever it is, it can be deadly to dogs.
- Mushrooms. Many common kinds of this fungus are toxic to dogs.
- Chocolate. The theobromine and caffeine in chocolate make it doubly toxic to dogs.
- Rhubarb. The calcium oxalate crystals in this lead to severe drops in calcium levels in dogs.
- Apricot. These contain small amounts of cyanide deadly to dogs.
- Xylitol. This artificial sweetener can cause very severe medical problems.
- Garlic. This veggie contains n-propyldisulfide and thiosulphate, which can both damage canine cells.
- Cherries. The seeds, stems, and leaves of this fruit have cyanide in them.
- Pitted Fruits. A dog who eats a whole fruit may ingest the pit, which can cause digestive obstruction.
- Raisins. Given the fact that raisins are dried grapes, this goes without saying.
- Alcohol. Whether liquid or in fermented solid food – can cause ethanol poisoning.
- Macadamia Nuts. There is an unknown toxin in these that damages the canine digestive, muscular, and nervous systems.
- Salty Foods. Dogs are sensitive to salt and can be poisoned by it.
- Coffee. It has caffeine, after all.
- Star Fruit. This fruit has the same crystals as rhubarb.
- Avocado. Though not severe, the persin in avocado can cause stomach issues.
- Hops. This plant is very toxic to dogs.
- Yeast. Yeast can lead to bloat (a medical emergency) or alcohol poisoning.
- Candy And Chewing Gum. Many of these contain xylitol.
- Onions. Just like garlic, onions have n-propyldisulfide and thiosulphate.
