Doesn’t your heart just break every time you see a ‘Lost Pet’ sign hanging on a telephone pole? That is the worst thing that can happen to a pet owner.
But, it could happen to any one of us. Someone opens the door and your dog dashes out before you have the chance to stop them. Or a window pops open and your cat jumps out. What do you do if you lose your pet? What happens if you lose your pet after a natural disaster – like a hurricane? The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey taught many pet owners some valuable lessons. Here is a list of things you can do if you and your dog ever get separated.
1. Contact local shelters. Tell the shelter your dog is missing and give them a description including breed, hair length and color, sex, age, and if their ears are droopy, short, long, or pointed. Be sure to mention any distinctive markings.
2. Reach out to AKC Reunite, if your dog is registered there. Be sure that their information is up to date. You can create an alert for a lost pet by going the website: “Lost Pet Alert.” This service works best if your pet has a microchip.
3. Use social media. We have seen how communities band together in times of distress. Posting a photo of your dog with information about how to reach you may be all you need to do.
4. Don’t give up. Do what you can for as long as you can. Your dog is counting on you!
