Here Are 8 Handy Tips On How To Prevent Dog Fights On Your Daily Walk

Dog fights are any dog parent’s worst nightmare – they cause injury, alienation and all in all lots of stress for both pooches and their families. Here’s eight handy tips on how to prevent dog fights on your daily walk!

  1. Learn how to notice the warning signs of a fight. Stiffening during play is normally a huge red light! If you see two pooches stiffen, that’s a sign that they’re not having fun anymore, break them apart before a fight breaks out!
  2. Likewise, even if you’re just walking around and you see your dog – or another dog – stiffen, don’t put the two dogs together. That’s a sure sign that you’ll be dealing with a fight!
  3. If you have a situation where a smaller dog and a bigger dog are fighting, pick the smaller dog up. It won’t make them very happy but it will protect them from harm!
  4. Too much chasing can very easily escalate unpleasantly. Watch out for other signs such as snarling, growling and biting that might indicate that the game isn’t fun anymore.
  5. One of the best methods to prevent dog fights is knowing your own pooch. Are they a bit too defensive? Then don’t let them near other dogs. That way you can easily prevent bad confrontations.
  6. The tried-and-tested method of the spray bottle works perfectly. You can spray a dog coming against you and stop them in their stride.
  7. Carry treats and toys! If a dog is coming against you, use these to distract him.
  8. Finally, at any sign of confrontation – leave! Don’t reinforce the dogs, because that’s just asking for trouble.
