Canine obesity is a very serious problem. It can leave your pup more susceptible to a wide range of problematic and dangerous diseases, like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, and even tumors.
But what can you do to help your dog lose weight? Start by talking to your vet about your options. In the most likely scenario, a balanced and healthy diet with a calorie deficit will be recommended for your pup. In order to prevent metabolism damage, you will likely slowly decrease their food intake in little increments.
Your dog will also likely need to get some exercise. Light exercise options, like walking on a leash for half an hour every day, will already be helpful. Additional physical activity from training and play will also help. If your dog is very weak, they will likely have to do very short increments of exercise until they are used to them. If you like, you can exercise with them to motivate them!
At home, you can opt to swap treats for healthier, low-calorie alternatives. Dog-safe vegetables and fruits are a great option. For extra help, you may want to consider an omega-3 supplement, but discuss that with your vet first!
