The American Pet Products Association recently released the results of a survey and found that in the United States, there are 94 million pet cats and 90 million pet dogs!
Adding fish, rabbits, canaries, and all other animals, the number jumps to 393 million animals! So, that is roughly 68% of all homes in the U.S. have some sort of pet. It is estimated that depending on the pet, the annual cost of having one pet could range from $230 to $2,000 per year. To see what cities in the United States are the most pet- friendly the financial website, WalletHub, looked at 100 of the largest cities and used 21 variables.
Some of the variables were local animal protection laws, cost of veterinary care, number of dog parks and outdoor spaces, the average home size, then the number of single-detached homes (that would have a yard for a dog), pet-friendliness of the rental market, and the number of pet-friendly restaurants. Scottsdale, Arizona was found to be the most pet-friendly, even though the cost of vet care is high.
Scottsdale has a lot of pet-friendly businesses and a plethora of pet-friendly indoor and outdoor spaces that helped it climb to the top of the list. The other cities that made it the top ten were Phoenix, Orlando, Atlanta, and Las Vegas. New York was 97th due to the high cost of vet care and pet-related businesses. The least pet-friendly city was Newark, that is because there are a small number of veterinarians and pet services, and very little pet-friendly spaces outdoors.
