Here's How To Efficiently Collect A Urine Sample From Your Dog

What do you do if your vet asks for a urine sample from your dog? Well, you’ll have to learn how to collect it!

Urine is an important excretory fluid for health testing because it is an end product of the body’s digestion and filtration, thus providing lots of information regarding nutrients and overall health.

Most vets need a fresh urine sample within half an hour in age because testing has to be done in the two hours following the sample’s collection if it’s not refrigerated, and even refrigeration only bumps that time up to 6 hours. So, how do you do it?

Start by taking a small container with a secure lid and a ladle or similar spoon-like utensil. Now, take note of your dog’s usual routine, so you know when they are most likely to use the bathroom. Give them a drink of water around an hour before you suspect they need to use the bathroom. Dog not wanting to drink? Add some dog-safe broth (low in sodium) to the bowl!

When your dog heads outdoors to use the bathroom, follow them until they stop and find a place to urinate. Wait patiently, because you following could slow them down. As soon as they squat, take your ladle and hold it beneath the urine stream. Transfer the liquid in the ladle to your container and put the lid on. All done!
