The best thing to have is your dog and your children bonding and playing together. However, making sure this bonding session unfolds smoothly can be a lot harder than you’d think.
How Can I Make Sure This Goes Well?
Here are a few things to keep in mind when trying to introduce your children and your dog to each other.
- Provide both of them their own safe spaces to retreat to when they are overwhelmed. Both dog and child should be able to leave an interaction at any point to escape into a space where they will not be disturbed.
- No matter how much you trust either of them, always actively supervise any interactions between the two. This is so you can keep an eye on the body language of both child and dog – important, since you need to identify the moment you have to step in.
- Never let a child handle a misbehaving dog on their own. Your children should be taught to always inform you, so that you can deal with the pet by yourself. This can save your child from scenarios where they are hurt by the dog, and vice versa.
At the end of the day, you should always remember this – any interaction between the two should always be a pleasant experience.
