It can be alarming when your once independent dog suddenly refuses to leave your side. Just what happened?

1. Your dog has simply gotten old. This can make them more dependant on you for help.
2. If it’s a sudden change, there may be an underlying medical condition in play.
3. Your dog’s anxiety may be related to Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS).

What Can I Do To Help?

Here are some things you can do to help your dog regain their independence.

1. Give them plenty of attention and reassurance. As dogs get older, they’ll need more of it.
2. Go back to basics. Practice “sit” and “stay” commands, and go through them again.
3. Don’t fuss over your dog when you leave or return home – this can make them more anxious.
4. Don’t encourage or reward clingy behavior. Instead, reward them while they are being relaxed and are lying down.
5. Provide them with a comfortable bed they can rest in while being close to you. Make sure to teach them how to use it as well.
