Shopping for toys for your puppy? Here’s what to consider.
Determine What Your Dog Likes
The first step in giving your puppy toys is finding out what toys they actually enjoy. Here are some possibilities to consider:
- Do they like moving toys? Get frisbees, balls, and other similar ones.
- Do they like destroying toys? Stuffed toys may not be best; opt for canvas or rubber toys.
- Do they like chewing toys without destroying them? Rope and rubber toys can withstand the repeated pressure.
- Do they like snuggling with toys? Opt for softer toys, and stuffies work wonderfully here!
- What other details should you take note of? Do they like squeakers or prefer silent toys? Do they like crinkly toys? Do they like textured toys?
Determine The Right Size
Many puppy toys are sold with a general guide for the appropriate age range or weight range, but they usually count this in pounds or kg. What you really should focus on is the size of your dog’s mouth. Never buy your puppy a toy that they can fit entirely into their mouth!
Determine The Right Strength
Many puppy toys are designed to be softer so they’re gentler on teeth. For many puppies, that’s fine – but for more destructive puppies, that’s a surefire way to spend way too much money replacing toys.
When in doubt, go for the stronger toy. You can always work your way done if your puppy needs something softer.
