Want to buy a dog kennel or doghouse for your dog? Here’s what to consider.
Size
Here are a few things to consider when it comes to the size of a dog kennel or doghouse.
- Consider the size of your dog. Most kennels or doghouses have a general guide for what breeds they are suited for.
- Movement. Your dog should be able to stand up, stretch comfortably, and turn around with ease inside of the kennel.
- Heat. You should still make sure that the kennel isn’t too big. It looks nice and even luxurious, but a too-big doghouse won’t retain the body heat of your dog, making it cold and drafty in there.
Construction
When it comes to construction, you have two main materials to choose from: plastic and wood. Here’s what you need to know about them.
Wooden doghouses must be raised a short amount off of the ground in order to prevent rotting from the moisture and other portions of the soil. A wooden kennel will also likely need to be manually treated in order to be weatherproof and waterproof. If not, the wood will become damaged and rot away quickly. They are also likely to be warmer.
As for plastic kennels, these are very easy to use. They’re waterproof, insulated, and quick to install. Do note that their surfaces can get quite hot or cold, depending on the season!
