How Can You Help Your Dog Manage Holiday Stress?

It’s natural that when holidays come by, you and your dog are equally excited, but sometimes that may not be the case. Some dogs do not like holiday spirits simply because it makes them anxious and stresses them out. So, how can you help your dog manage holiday stress?

For shy dogs being in a crown is a complete no-no because the noise from parties and changes in the environment can leave shy dogs afraid, anxious and stressed. While you don’t have to stop celebrating with your friends, you need to keep your dog’s best interest in mind. You need to be able to help them stay calm and stress-free. But, how?

1. Dedicate a calm and safe room to them

Whether it’s your bedroom or your office, a safe room is where your dogs feel comfortable spending time in. Garages and noisy rooms are not ideal for shy pets; they will only add to their stress. Ensure your guests know your dog’s safe room and that they are off-limits. But in order for your dog to stay comfortably in his safe room he/she needs to have practiced staying in the room before your party is scheduled. In the safe room, don’t forget to put some water, food, toys and a comfortable bed for your dog.

2. Tell your guests about your dogs

Some of your guests might not be dog parents and hence they may have misconceptions about dogs and may not know how to approach your dog. Tell your guests what makes your dog happy and what makes them mad. Tell your guests that they should avoid scaring your dogs. Guests should be given general advice related to your dogs and that certain behaviors could make your dogs bite or scratch them.

Children should be told to stay away from your dogs, especially if your dogs aren’t used to being around kids. Children should be told to not chase your dogs, ride on them, pick them up or scare them. Make sure pet rules are clearly established and that a child and a dog should never be left alone without adult supervision.
