Being a dog parent means you have to be conscious of your neighbors. Not everyone is a fan of dogs and unfortunately, it can create tension in the neighborhood. Too often this becomes a feud between neighbors and it never ends well.
Here are some ways you can prevent your dog from being a burden to others and keep the peace:
Keep tags and Vaccination Up-to-date
It’s your responsibility to keep your dog safe, and out of trouble. Sometimes, accidents happen, and if your dog bites another dog, and you have no proof of a rabies shot, you may face disciplinary actions. Keeping your dog vaccinated prevents infections that can spread between dogs and humans. Remember, to also have your dog microchipped with a tag that contains your name, their name, your address, and phone number.
Educate Yourself On The Pet Ordinances In Your Community
You should be aware of all the rules regarding your dogs. This can include leash laws, how many dogs you can have, and tag requirements.
Communicate with neighbors
Have conversations with your neighbors about your dog. This can include what they are and aren’t comfortable with. Do not wait until you get a complaint.
Mend fences
Check your fences regularly for broken boards or links. Keep them padlocked to prevent animals and children from wandering in. Ensure your fence is tall enough to prevent jumping and put in anti-digging barriers.
Teach your dog to be quiet
Barking and howling can be annoying to your neighbors. Train your dog to quiet down or get the help of a trainer.
Pick up poop immediately
Keep your yard clean of waste to prevent odors and insect infestations. Do not allow your dog to poop on your neighbor’s lawn. That’s rude.
Go for walks
Keep your dog on a leash and harness in public spaces. This prevents him/her from darting into traffic or having confrontations with other dogs and humans.
