How To Discourage Your Puppy From Biting You

If you’re a first-time dog parent, you may not know that puppies have very sharp teeth, which they may use on you if you’re not careful. While you may find your pup mouthing you cute at first, it is a behavior you need to curtail before it becomes dangerous, especially if you have children or vulnerable people at home.

Your puppy should learn not to bite people as soon as their baby teeth erupt at three weeks old. You should teach them by discouraging the behavior. You can do this by yelping when they nip you and then withdrawing from playing with them for a while, letting them know their nip was painful. It would be best if you rewarded your puppy only when they play nicely without their teeth.

When puppies start teething around three weeks old, they need something to bite and chew on. Another way to discourage them from biting is by buying them toys designed for chewing. So whenever they bite you, you can redirect their attention to the toy or chew treat.

Your pup won’t stop biting you or others in your home overnight because it is a natural behavior. Remember that shouting and scolding them won’t make things any better. You should be patient with them and ensure everyone in your home consistently trains them to play nicely without using their teeth.
