Tornadoes can cause a lot of destruction is a short span of time. Here’s how to keep your dog safe in the event of a tornado.
What Is A Tornado Watch?
A tornado watch is sent out in the event of unfavorable weather conditions that may potentially lead to a tornado, or at least a bad storm. In this case:
- Go indoors and bring your dog with you, making sure to keep them close.
- Find a place that you and your dog can find shelter if necessary.
- Monitor the weather updates for more news.
What Is A Tornado Warning?
- A tornado warning is sent out when there has been an actual tornado in your area. In this situation, you should take your dog and go to the aforementioned safe place.
- Your main focus leading up to a tornado warning should be to find a safe place to go. Your dog may panic and attempt to run off when the disaster hits, so have a collar, leash, and harness ready.
- A safe space in your home should have no windows and no glass furniture, and, preferably, access to water.
What To Do When A Tornado Hits
- Take your dog’s crate, an emergency kit (with food, water, first-aid, and important documents), puppy pads or poop bags, a torchlight, and an emergency radio.
- Bring your dog on a harness and leash and keep them close.
Aftermath
- Once you receive word that things are safe, leave your dog in the safe room and go first to inspect your home for anything that may harm your dog, such as branches, glass, and fences. Do not go into areas that are seriously damaged.
- If you need to evacuate, keep an eye on your dog’s behavior for signs of severe stress.
