Wildfires spread quickly, are often uncontrollable, and can pose a serious risk to you and your dog. Here’s how to protect them and yourself.
Preparing for a Wildfire
- Begin by creating a clear space around your home. There should be no tree branches, brush, or other potentially flammable materials within 100 feet of its vicinity.
- Keep your hoses connected and ready to run as soon as needed. Try to build your home and its attachments with materials that are fire resistant.
- You should also keep yourself informed. Keep an eye on weather reports so nothing takes you by surprise.
What Is A Wildfire Watch?
- A wildfire watch is issued when the weather conditions could potentially result in wildfires, or lead to the spreading of wildfires to your area.
- If one is issued, you should prepare yourself. Stay alert and monitor relevant warning systems and reports.
What Is A Wildfire Warning?
- These warnings are also referred to as Red Flat Warnings and are issued when especially dry conditions pose an extremely high wildfire combustion or spread risk.
- If this is the case for you, clear out the area around your home of flammable debris and get your emergency supplies in order. You will usually have a day or two to prepare and make the necessary arrangements.
Aftermath
- Keep a close eye on your dog after the wildfire is over.
- The bad air conditions can harm them, especially if they have respiratory, cardiovascular, or allergy issues.
