Ice Cream And Your Dog

Ice Cream And Your Dog

Hands up if you love ice cream. Even those who aren’t supposed to have ice cream sneak some on occasion. But what about your dog? Can dogs enjoy ice cream safely too?

Well, yes, and no. In small amounts, ice cream is a treat and isn’t toxic to your dog. In larger amounts, this can become an issue, especially if your dog is lactose-intolerant.

When Is Eating Ice Cream Ok For Dogs?

Well, if your dog steals a quick lick, you don’t have to worry since a small amount isn’t toxic. If you notice your dog does it quite often, he/she may have acquired a taste for this frozen delight, In such cases, find an all-natural brand created for dogs. The ingredients in ice cream for humans may pose issues.

If you aren’t able to find ice cream for your dog, frozen bananas and natural yogurt can do the trick.

Effects of Human Ice Cream on Dogs

Ice cream can have a negative impact even if your dog isn’t lactose intolerant. After being weaned from their mother, most dogs are unable to digest milk properly. This may result in:

  • Gas
  • Upset stomach
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Pancreatitis (severe cases)

Ice cream is not a good source of nutrients for dogs and may contribute to canine obesity. Ensure the ice cream given to your dog does not contain toxic ingredients such as chocolate or xylitol.

As always, consult your regular veterinarian before introducing any new foods into your dog’s diet. Vanilla ice cream is usually the best bet, but be sure to only give your dog ice cream as a treat and in small quantities.
