Is Mistletoe Poisonous for Your Pup?

A kiss under the mistletoe might be…

At this time of the year, all the family loves decorating the house. But if your family includes dogs, you might have to exercise caution as you deck the halls.

You probably realize that the sharp leaves on mistletoe, a classic Christmas decoration, pose a threat to any animals that might try to eat it. But did you know that mistletoe is actually toxic for many animals, and that includes the four-legged members of your family. Dr. Rivera, a West Village Veterinary Hospital vet explains that all parts of the mistletoe plant can be dangerous to dogs.

If you’re worried that your dog might have gotten to the mistletoe, check for these symptoms:

  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Abnormal heart rate
  • Collapse
  • Seizures
  • Death

And what should you do if you recognize any of these symptoms?

Dr. Rivera says, even if you didn’t see your dog eating mistletoe if you have any suspicions, you should get to a vet straight away, and preferably a specialist in poison control, such as ASPCA Animal Poison Control or the Pet Poison Control Hotline.

Of course, the best way to keep your dog safe during the holidays is to avoid mistletoe and any other toxic or dangerous decorations in the first place. Either keep them out of the house altogether or take extra care to place them well out of reach of the family dog.
