Is Your Dog A Picky Eater? Here Are 5 Tips To Help You!

One thing we humans really have in common with our beloved dogs is that we all have our likes and dislikes or dog-hates when it comes to food.

Salty or sweet, bland, or spicy. “Which is better?”, we ask ourselves as we prepare to consume. Most dogs are fairly satisfied with whatever is put in their bowl and some of them will wolf anything down with gay abandon and then proceed to lick the platter clean. We’ve all heard the sound of an empty bowl spinning around as the owner makes sure there really isn’t a scrap left.

Then we get the picky eaters. At feed time they wander over to the bowl, sniff, sometimes giving their provider a scathing look before departing without eating a scrap. It becomes quite challenging to please these dogs and sometimes requires a bit of ingenuity. Here are some tips:

  • Firstly, rule out any potential health problems by letting the vet give your pet a once-over. Sometimes there may be underlying reasons for a dog refusing to eat, such as a broken tooth that causes pain when he bites down, or stomach issues caused by certain types of food
  • Ensure that the whole family is aware of the problem and he does not get fed in between meals
  • Discourage begging. Teach him that his food is always in his bowl. Place any extras or snacks into this bowl. This will also teach him to discern between his own food and humans’ food
  • Try and feed him at the same time every day. This will enable him to get used to being fed at a certain time
  • If he’s being really fussy it sometimes pays to disguise food that you know he needs in a snack that he usually likes. Before he knows it he will have wolfed down both!
