In 2015, Sara Ortín León went on a trip from her home in Barcelona, Spain to Africa. She went to Zambia and spent one-year researching chimpanzees at a sanctuary.
There were several dogs living at the sanctuary, one of them was named Ginger. Sara said that she loved Ginger from the minute they met. Ginger reminded Sara of a dog she had back in Barcelona. Ginger returned the love right back to Sara – it was as if they were soul mates. When Sara went to the chimp enclosures, Ginger was by her side.
The two would make the 6.2 mile walk to the enclosures and back every day. Ginger slept next to Sara, and they were both warm and cozy! But, the time came when Sara had to return to her home. But, she left Ginger behind. After all, Ginger was part of the sanctuary.
Sara returned home with her family, wrote her thesis and decided she didn’t want to live in Barcelona anymore. All she could think about was Zambia and Ginger. By the time she got back to the sanctuary, Ginger wasn’t there anymore. Ginger and her sister had become security dogs at a mining business.
To make a long story short – Sara got Ginger from the business, and the two have been traveling around Africa together ever since! The first year of their travels took them to Malawi, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Once Ginger relaxed, she started having the time of her life! Sara and Ginger even go to schools to show children how to interact with dogs!
