Local Shelter Offers Tips For Pet Parents To Keep Their Pups Healthy And Happy

Pet parents need to be extra cautious about their pets over summer and remember they are wearing fur coats.

So if you want to exercise your pets rather do it in the early morning or after the sun goes down when it is cooler and you should avoid hot pavements or hot sand if you are planning a trip to the beach. These are some tips from Barbara Hays, the Bureau Manager at the Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center, who says that over summer the number of pets who come into their facility are much higher.

Every month they get in between 400 and 600 pets who can all be adopted. She says human/animal conflict often rises in summer because everyone is outside. If you’re thinking of adopting, the Norfolk SPCA is another good place to go. They do about 1,000 adoptions per year. You can also take your pet to their public vet clinic, which last year saw around 11,000 pets coming through their vaccine clinic.

It is very important to vaccinate your dog so they don’t get sick and suffer unnecessarily. Rob Blizard, Executive Director of the Norfolk SPCA, appealed to people to think of a shelter first when considering adoption, saying these are the pets which are homeless and need to find homes. At the Norfolk SPCA, you can adopt adult dogs for $20 and puppies for $40. Please share this message with everyone you know.
