Loving Couple Drive 6 Hours To Bring Home The Saddest Pup From The Shelter

Finally settled in an apartment that would allow them to have a dog, Jessica Williams was thrilled and couldn’t wait to adopt. Her boyfriend, Jared, said they’d adopt for her birthday, which was in November.

But Jessica couldn’t wait. She headed online and started looking through shelter dogs, and it wasn’t long before she found one in desperate need of help: Benji.

Benji had been brought to a large public shelter in Los Angeles after being taken in as a stray. He was a nervous pup, especially around people, and most of his fur was lost to a flea allergy. He definitely wasn’t the kind of pup you’d expect to be someone’s first choice, but the moment Williams saw him, she couldn’t stop thinking about him.

He had only been at the shelter for around 10 days but was doing terribly. He snapped and snarled at every single person he saw and was handling the environment badly. Williams knew he had to be very sad and couldn’t bring herself to let him stay there any longer. She told her boyfriend about Benji, and even though they live a six-hour drive away in Sacramento, they decided to go down to get him.

Staff at the shelter tried to tell the couple that Benji would likely not be a good fit for anyone, informing them that he was not friendly and wouldn’t be a cuddly kind of dog. They didn’t even allow them to take Benji into a quiet waiting room to get to know him. But Williams knew that there was a good chance Benji would be euthanized, so they took him anyway.

It was a long six-hour drive back. Benji was wary and standoffish, but the couple had their minds made up and he was now a part of their family. When they arrived home, he seemed to want to keep his distance – but then he revealed that the long drive had been totally worth it. Within just a few days, Benji started to come out of his shell. It was like he knew he was safe. Slowly, he exhibited a sweet and playful side.

Now, Benji loves giving his Mom and Dad kisses, loves playing with toys, and gets really excited for road trips and drives! He goes with his new family just about everywhere, and he couldn’t be happier. Williams and her boyfriend are so glad they took a chance on him!
