Loving Couple Open Their Hearts And Home To Homeless Pets

Kathy and Bob Helfer are dog lovers. They don’t want just any dog though, they take the dogs that others don’t want – like the puppy mill survivors, senior dogs, and dogs missing teeth or even their bottom jaw.

The dogs the Helfers’ have living with them, Scarlet and Herbie, were both adopted from Hearts United for Animals (HUA) in Auburn. Scarlet is a 9-year-old Yorkie and puppy mill survivor. Herbie is a 9-year-old Chihuahua that was rescued just before being euthanized at a shelter in Missouri. Kathy believes that helping an older, unwanted dog live out its life in a happy and safe place is worth it.

When the Helfers’ adopted Herbie, they were told he was jumpy and shy – but the Helfers’ have not seen that from Herbie at all! Scarlet had mammary tumors and a malignant tumor when the Helfers’ took her in. She underwent surgery to have the tumors removed and is doing great! Before the couple adopted Scarlet and Herbie, they had adopted three other unwanted, older dogs (Zachary, Doree, and Willy Wonka) from HUA all of those dogs have passed.

Kathy says that it is always hard to lose them, but despite the heartache, they keep going back to HUA to offer another dog a second chance at a happy life. Kathy is not alone in being against puppy mills. Puppy breeders care about making money, not about caring for the animals in their care. Please consider adopting your next fur baby.
