Mama Dog Who Lost Her Own Pups Adopts Orphaned Puppies

Tragedy had struck at Ruff Start Rescue in Minnesota. Poppy, a mama dog, had unexpectedly passed away after giving birth to a litter of 10 puppies. This big litter was without a mom and the volunteers at the shelter had to come up with a solution or else they would not survive.

Volunteers worked around the clock, staying late hours at night helping to bottle feed. Lexi Johnson, a foster pet parent, and her husband had to wake up every three hours to feed them, and this was a lengthy task since there were so many of them. Soon, there was another tragedy. Another mama dog named Pepper had given birth to a litter of puppies. Unfortunately, all the puppies died. The Johnsons took her in.

When she arrived at the house, the first thing she did was sit next to the litter. They put the puppies next to her and she intuitively started nursing them. They took to her within five minutes and she had accepted them all. It was a miracle! Immediately the puppies’ chances of survival increased significantly and a huge weight was taken off the volunteers’ shoulders.

The pups nor Pepper won’t be up for adoption until she is finished nursing. The rescue estimates this will be around August 25 and persons have already shown interest in a few of the puppies. Till then, they will continue to enjoy each other’s lives and find comfort in each other. It’s amazing how a tragedy has managed to bring all of them together.
