Man Drops 'Senior' Pup At Shelter And Breaks Everyone's Hearts With His Final Request

When 20-year-old Radar the pup was surrendered to the Harris County Animal Shelter, staff were shocked. The pup looked completely fine, but his parent was asking that the dog be put to sleep.

Staff didn’t want to euthanize this clearly healthy, very confused pup. They knew they had to get him out of the stressful environment of the shelter so he could continue to stay healthy. So they put up a Facebook post asking for someone to take in the terrified senior.

A volunteer with Houston, Texas’ Animal Justice League soon stumbled upon the post. Jennifer Graves, the president of that group’s rescue board, immediately knew they had to help Radar. The pup was moved out from the county shelter and taken to a vet.

The pup was found to have too-long nails and matted fur, suggesting he had been neglected. He didn’t have a lot of muscle and his bones were protruding, which suggested he’d spent a lot of time confined to a crate or small cage. He also likely wasn’t 20, but a whopping 5-8 years younger than that! To top it all off, he had a heart murmur, a fever, and a gastrointestinal infection.

Radar was so confused and sad for being abandoned. He was constantly searching around for signs of his family. When he couldn’t find anyone he recognized, he’d just choose someone at random and cuddle with them.

Even when he was placed in a shelter home, he wasn’t doing the best. But he does, now, enjoy being around people and receiving much-needed affection – something it seems he didn’t get much of before.

It’s not currently clear if Radar will recover completely, but staff are hopeful that the pup will get the second chance at a happy life that he deserves.
