Bill was stopping by a rest stop on his way back from an Arkansas fishing trip to use the bathroom. When he came back to his car to continue his journey to Missouri, he found that there as a pup sitting in the shotgun seat!
The dog was emaciated and covered in grime of all sorts, so Bill gave her a Rice Krispie Treat, which she devoured eagerly. He realized, as she eagerly thanked him while remaining anxious of her surroundings, that he had to help her.
It wouldn’t be the first time that Bill – and his wife, Angela Shaver – have rescued a stray. In fact, they have three rescued pups and rescued kitty already. The moment Bill sent Angela a picture of the new pup he’d found, she immediately agreed that they should keep her. They named her River and Angela and the couple’s son hurried out to meet the newcomer the moment they got home!
River didn’t want to get out of the car, though, as she felt safe there. Bill had to gently coax and carry her out. She was slowly introduced to the other household pets one at a time. Then, it was time for a bath. A good wash got rid of the blood and mud stuck to her fur, and then Bill worked to remove some ticks from her body. Finally, she ate a yummy dinner and slept in her new Mom and Dad’s room in a bed just for her, next to their heater.
River started to slowly and steadily explore the next day. She began to play with her new pup and cat siblings, though she was sure to be careful and stick close to Mom and Dad. Surprisingly, she seemed to be housebroken, implying she may have had a home before.
A short while after, River was brought to the vet. She had neck and face wounds as well as heartworms and tapeworms, so she had to be put on medication and her wounds clean. By now, she stayed relaxed, as though she knew she was finally receiving help.
Now, River is learning to be a happy dog, and she’s settling in well to her forever home. She has a way to go, but she’s having a lot of fun as she does it. She sure is glad that she chose to hide out in Bill’s car!
