Man’s Best Friends Even In Death: 5 Dogs That Stayed Loyal

Dogs are considered man’s best friend because of their loyalty to us. Some dogs’ loyalty extends through this life and into the next.

Here are 5 dogs that stayed loyal even in death:

Ruswarp- A Border Collie Who Stayed With His Human For 11 Weeks

Ruswarp is a 14-year-old Border Collie. He spent most of his days with his dad, Graham Nuttall, going on hikes in the mountainside of Burnley, Wales. One day, in January of 1990, Graham had not returned from his hike and neither did his dog. A search party was gathered and they searched for over a week for the pair. It wasn’t until eleven weeks later that another hiker named David Clarke stumbled upon his body being guarded by Ruswarp on a cold winter day. Ruswarp died shortly after and in 2009, a bronze statue was erected in his honor.

Leao, Stood Guard At His Humans Muddy Grave

Leao’s human’s life tragically ended in 2011 near Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, when floods and mudslides ravaged the area taking the lives of at least 600 citizens. Her name was Cristina Cesario Maria Santana and she had died alongside her family. When the rescuers were looking for survivors, they discovered Leao digging into the ground. Below them were his humans. Leao remained at the site for weeks after the body was removed until he was rescued by an animal organization in Brazil.

Fido The Faithful

The scene was World War 2 in 1941. Carlo Soriani, a brick kiln worker from San Lorenzo, Italy found an injured dog on his way home. He nursed the dog back to health and he was given the name Fido, which means ‘faithful’ in Latin, and that he was. Fido would follow his dad to the bus station and would wait there until he came home. Unfortunately, an accident happened at the factory and his father passed away unbeknownst to Fido. Fido returned to that bus station every day for 14 years in hopes of seeing his dad again. His loyalty led to a monument being placed in his honor and his story spread throughout the country.

Capitan- He Slept On His Human’s Grave For Twelve Years

Capitan was a German Shepherd fathered by Miguel for only a year. During that time, they became as thick as thieves. When Miguel died, Capital went to live with Miguel’s family. He would randomly disappear until it was discovered that he would slip away to sleep on Miguel’s grave. This continued for twelve years and soon the caretakers of the cemetery became his guardians. He did this until he died in 2018.

Canelo of Cadiz

Canelo belonged to an ill man who would take him along with him to his dialysis treatments at the hospital in the late 1980s. Since Canelo was not allowed inside, he would wait patiently by the door until his human emerged. Unfortunately, the man died during one of his treatments. Canelo was unaware and waited outside for twelve years until his death. This inspired locals who named an alley after him and erected a plaque.
