All 9-year-old black Labrador Hardy wanted was to jump into the river in front of his home like he always does. But on this particular day, it wasn’t the best idea.
Temperatures outside had hit -6 degrees on some nights, and the body of water had frozen over. But Hardy didn’t realize that and jumped in anyway, much to the horror of his dog walker. Immediately, he found himself trapped in the frozen river, and his walker quickly contacted help.
The Northumberland Fire and Rescue Services and RSPCA were soon rushing to Hardy’s aid.
With the use of an ice pick and brave RSPCA inspector Jaqui Miller, who had to carefully crawl out onto the ice and drag Hardy back to land, they were able to rescue the pup in the nick of time.
Finally, Hardy broke free from his icy prison and hurried back to shore and into the arms of his nervous dog walker. Despite the ordeal, he was found to be medically fine, if a bit cold.
After some warming up and with the promise of treats when he got home, Hardy seemed pretty unfazed by the incident and will probably be diving into the river soon in warmer weather.
