Breaking historic record as the largest animal rescue flight, over 600 cats and dogs, found perishing in Maui, Oahu, and Kauai shelters in Hawaii following the global pandemic, were airlifted to the USA, last October 28, using a Hercules C-130 plane.
In a collected effort to provide better care and loving homes for the rescued pets, the following organizations collaborated with the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association, to ensure the success of the operation, now known as the “Paws Across the Pacific,”: Wings of Rescue, Greater Good Charities, John R. Peterson Foundation, The Animal Rescue Site, Banfield Foundation, VCA Charities, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Petco Foundation, Royal Canin, and Healthy Paws Pet Insurance & Foundation.
“The Paws Across the Pacific flight is urgently needed to make space in Hawaii’s shelters for at-risk pets who otherwise wouldn’t be able to receive necessary care to survive,” Greater Good Charities CEO Liz Baker said.
Following the sudden death of her dog, Stella, Baker adopted a Labrador pup whom she named, Hilo, after the pup’s hometown. Shuttling from Phoenix to Seattle to meet the animals, Baker tearfully cradled Hilo while welcoming the rescue group, rejoicing over the prospect of finding wonderful homes for the many other ‘Stellas.’
The plane landed on Seattle’s Boeing Field where volunteers from pet shelters and rescue organizations from Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington waited to welcome, unload, and ensure the health and safe transfer of the animals.
